The city of Lima will compete with Rio de Janeiro to host the final of the 2018 Copa Libertadores, according to the president of the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), Edwin Oviedo, who said he asked to host that decisive match after Conmebol decided that the champion will be determined by a single game in a neutral field.
Oviedo commented that the request has already been made official and now it will be up to the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) to resolve this.
"We have already requested to Conmebol for Lima to host the final of the 2018 Copa Libertadores. We are also on that list with Brazil, which is proposing Rio de Janeiro. We will continue to work to make it happen, God willing", said the head of Peruvian football to NexTV.
Starting from the next edition, the Copa Libertadores will determine its champion in a single decisive game in a neutral field, just like the Champions League does. Once Lima is confirmed as the host, the task will be to designate the venue where the game will take place.
The Estadio Nacional with a capacity of 43,083 spectators and the Monumental with 80,093 are the strong proposals of the FPF. Lima has already hosted 3 Copa Libertadores finals. The first one was in 1971 when Nacional from Uruguay and Estudiantes de La Plata played a playoff game that ended 2-0 in favor of 'El Bolso'. Then, 2 Peruvian teams were locals in the first leg of the final: Universitario against Independiente (0-0) in 1972 and Sporting Cristal against Cruzeiro (0-0) in 1997.
