Peru's National Team dreams of qualifying for the World Cup after defeating Uruguay

After the great victory of Peru's National Team at the National Stadium against Uruguay by 2-1 (Matchday 14 of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers), the hope of qualifying for the World Cup has grown. However, former team member Percy Olivares is not so optimistic about it. He explained the reasons on the program "A Todo Gol" of RPP Noticias this Saturday.

"For me, the word leader means a lot. I believe there are different types of leaders. What I believe about Paolo is that he should be the most important center forward in Peru in recent years, but being a leader is not natural for him. In fact, he has become what we all want: an icon," he said to narrate his first motive.

No project. Another point that Olivares highlights is that the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) did not create a long-term work plan that leads to the current period of the Qualifiers. According to him, the Peruvian National Team cannot have a place in the 2018 World Cup because it does not deserve it and "only merit should be rewarded."

"We do not deserve to be in a World Cup. What I'm saying may be a bit selfish, but I'm realistic. I say it because we haven't worked to be in a World Cup, so if we win a spot to go, that's good because both things are valid and for all of Peru. But if we are realistic and honest, we don't deserve to be in one," he said.

"We are starting to work, yes. I don't know if we are doing it well or badly, that will be seen along the way. Let's not sell that idea to the people because they get excited," added the 'Zancudo' to acknowledge the work of Ricardo Gareca and his coaching staff leading the team in the current process.

The 'Foquita'. With the same assertiveness of his response about the captain of the team, Paolo Guerrero, he also talked about Jefferson Farfán. Percy Olivares made it clear that he wants the midfielder from Lokomotiv Moscow back in the squad, especially after his debut in the league of that country with a goal.

"Here, excuse me because when I talk about Jefferson I have to admit that I have a certain weakness. For me, he is that different player in any lineup, I have always considered him that way. He has been like that since he started playing football until now, with everything that happens around him. Maybe he's playing better or worse, but Jefferson is dangerous at all times," he concluded.

Peru's National Team is currently in seventh place in the World Cup Qualifiers with 18 points.
Peruvian fans filled the National Stadium on Matchday 14, a clear show of their faith in the team.
