Jose Riestra, President of Atlas, describes this season as one of the most challenging moments of his career
Atlas lose their aspirations for the Apertura 2023 playoffs after a 0-2 defeat against Pachuca. This has been labeled as a 'deep crisis' by the red and black team's management, led by Jose Riestra, executive president of the club, due to the current situation within the institution.
The poor level of football displayed by Atlas has been reflected in low attendance at Estadio Jalisco during their home games. The events of the current semester at Atlas are now considered a crisis, leading to the dismissal of Mexican coach Benjamin Mora.
The executive president of Atlas, Jose Riestra, held a press conference at Academia Aga where he acknowledged the crisis: "We knew there was a crisis, that we were going through a tough time. Yesterday it was confirmed, beyond the departure of Benjamin Mora, it is confirmed that there are many more responsible parties. It becomes clear that the crisis is deeper than it seemed. It requires a thorough analysis, it is one of the most difficult moments of my career. There is an issue with our fans, it is not pleasant to see yesterday's attendance at the stadium," commented the executive.
The Red and Blacks of Atlas are starting to say goodbye to the Apertura 2023 tournament, as with the defeat against Tuzos yesterday, the team is now in sixteenth position with 16 points, resulting from four wins, four draws, and seven losses.
In addition to Atlas' position in the general table with two matchdays remaining, their relationship with the fans is also a concern. The attendance has been unattractive, with less than ten thousand spectators at Estadio Jalisco yesterday, a number lower than that of a Liga de Expansión game, according to a report from Liga MX.
Atlas will close the regular season under the interim management of Omar Flores, with their next match against Pumas at Ciudad Universitaria, and will finish the tournament at home against Rayos del Necaxa.
