The bond between Cruz Azul and its followers has not been the strongest since its move to the Azteca Stadium, except for the exciting final where they won their ninth star in the Mexican League. This has led to the possibility of a return of the 'cementeros' to the legendary Estadio Azul.
The return of 'La Maquina' to what is now known as the Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes would not be a definitive decision, and would not come alone, as Club America also plans to temporarily move to the same venue, currently used by the Potros de Hierro del Atlante.
Cruz Azul and America will be forced to leave the Azteca Stadium due to upcoming renovations that will take place to prepare the stadium for the 2026 World Cup. According to ESPN reporter John Sutcliffe, this move is scheduled for January 2024, as renovation work at the Coloso de Santa Ursula will begin in March.
The news of the move was confirmed by Jonh Sutcliffe, who mentioned: "For the activity of America and Cruz Azul, starting in January, they are in very advanced talks with the Cosío family, who own the Plaza México and the Ciudad de los Deportes soccer stadium."
It is worth noting that the Azteca Stadium will host its third World Cup in 2026, when Mexico -along with the United States and Canada- organizes the biggest event in world football.
Sutcliffe also revealed: "I can announce that in January, Cruz Azul and América will already start playing at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, although the Azteca Stadium will not close until March." This change of venue promises to be an interesting chapter in the history of both teams as they adapt to their new temporary home.
