The Mexican national soccer team defeated Guatemala 2-0 on Wednesday in a preparation match for the 2023 Gold Cup played at Mazatlan Stadium (northwest of Mexico) in front of 20,068 spectators.
In the 13th minute, Honduran referee Nelson Salgado awarded a penalty in favor of Mexico for a handball by Nicolas Samayoa inside the area. Raul Jimenez executed the penalty in the 14th minute with a subtle shot to the left of goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen that went in the opposite direction.
Guatemala came close to equalizing in the 39th minute when Esteban Garcia connected a header inside the small area that goalkeeper Luis Malagon sent for a corner kick with a deflection over the crossbar.
