MEXICO -- The former referee Paul Delgadillo admitted that there was a foul in America's first goal in the second leg of the Clausura 2013 final of the Liga MX, so if the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had existed, it could have been a different story.
In that match, held on May 26, 2013, the Azulcrema team was losing 1-0 (2-0 on aggregate), just a few minutes before the end, however, the Colombian Aquivaldo Mosquera scored the equalizer goal in that game, preceded by an illegal block by Francisco Javier Rodriguez on Gerardo Flores.
The referee acknowledged that there was a violation of the rules in that action, so that goal should not have counted, with which the Águilas started the comeback that ended with a title won in penalties.
"Being self-critical, on the first play (of America's goal), there is a foul. To say there isn't would be covering the sun with one finger," said the referee in September 2019 to Pasión W.
He explained, "It could be that with VAR, the situation would change because the first play is an evident foul, but due to the number of players, I don't see it."
"It is a demonstration that you enter the field to try to comply with the rule regardless of the colors, if it is not called, it is because the referee does not see it. That is why VAR is now there, to avoid human error, but I am sure that no one does it with predisposition," he said.
He made it clear that there is no foul in America's second goal, after it was mentioned that there was a previous push in Moisés Muñoz's shot, which sent the game into extra time.
