As Juventus took the field against Atlético Madrid for their final friendly of the summer, maybe the most obvious thing that was on display is just how incomplete this squad still is despite their season opener fast approaching in a week’s time.
While one or two signings won’t instantly fix that, they could fill some glaring holes that are still left to fill.
The biggest of those has been the chase to sign Teun Koopmeiners, that took its latest turn last week when Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini said the 26-year-old Dutchman was holding out for a move to Juventus. That is the inflection point that Juve may have been waiting for to strike, with talks seemingly reigniting around the same time.
Throw in the first of what is expected to be a couple of wingers signed before the summer mercato ends in the form of Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez and Juve could be close to making a couple of key moves as we all wait to see if this team will have any sort of depth come the beginning of September.
On Episode 244 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss:
- Juventus look like they’re getting closer and closer to signing Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, who has reportedly been their top transfer target for months now.
- Juventus also look like they’re getting closer and closer to signing Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez, who will be the latest attacker that they have acquired from the purple-clad club down in Florence.
- Juventus, however, won’t be signing Nice center back Jean-Clair Todibo, who instead has signed with West Ham after the Hammers hijacked the Bianconeri’s deal for the French defender.
- So ... now what do Juve do to bring in a new central defender? (Or just their general lack of depth in general?)
- Twitter questions — including if Cristiano Giuntoli is trying to do too much on the transfer market this summer in an attempt to turn over Juventus’ roster, what Juventus’ biggest needs on the transfer market are coming out of the slate of friendlies, what expectations for Dusan Vlahovic should be, what players we’re most excited to see this season, and predictions for Juventus’ season opener against Como.
