Nizar Aissaoui, a 35-year-old Tunisian football player, set himself on fire outside a police station after being accused of terrorism, according to the Italian news agency Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA).
It was the player himself who posted a video on social media showing the moment he set himself on fire - the video has since been deleted. In the video, he explains that he has been "unjustly accused" and that is why he decided to take such drastic action.
"I wanted to draw attention to the violation committed by a merchant who was selling bananas at ten dinars per kilogram. But I was punished, accused of terrorism, and involved in a case that I had nothing to do with," the football player says in his recording, while other people try to calm him down.
According to ANSA, Nizar Aissaoui was admitted to the Aghlabiti hospital in Kairuan, about 160 kilometers south of the Tunisian capital. Later, he was transferred to the Ben Arous Burns Center to receive treatment for his injuries.
At the moment, the condition of Aissaoui is unknown. He has played for various teams, including Union Sportif de Monastir in the Tunisian first division, as well as El Gaouefel de Gafsa, Jeridet Tozeur, and Espoir Sportif di Haffouz.
