New sports director appointed at Espanyol
Spanish Jordi Lardín has been appointed as the new sports director of Espanyol Barcelona, replacing Ángel Gómez, who was dismissed from his position this Monday.
The Administration Council of the Catalan team announced Ángel Gómez's dismissal on their official website, and also informed about the addition of the former "periquitos" player to the sports management of the club.
"Speedy," as he was known during his playing career, took over the coordination of the club's youth football in 2012. During his tenure, the club's academy experienced a revival.
Born in the city of Manresa, Lardín is one of the most emblematic players in the history of Espanyol. He played 70 matches and scored 22 goals in two spells with the team, the first one from 1992 to 1997 and the second one from 2000 to 2001.
The former Spanish forward began his new role starting this Monday, and the first challenge he will face in his new position is the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey against Alcorcón, in which Mexican defender Diego Reyes has been called up.
