L’Equipe reported on Saturday several excerpts from the book "Memories" that Johan Cruyff wrote, before his death, with journalist David Walsh from The Times.
The book will be released on October 6th. Cruyff reveals that he prevented the departure of Pep Guardiola from Barcelona, to later become a decisive figure as a player and, above all, as a coach of the Catalan club.
"Barça wanted to get rid of him. They considered him weak, bad at defense, and useless in aerial plays. What no one saw was that he had the basic qualities to go far: intelligence in the game, speed in execution, technique. If I hadn't been at Barcelona, he would have probably been sold to a Second Division club," recalls Cruyff. The Flying Dutchman also acknowledges what his main advice was to the current Manchester City coach: "He had to be the boss. The one making decisions and assuming the consequences."
