The Costa Rican coach returns to Guatemala as the helmsman of Cartaginés to fight for a spot in the Concacaf Champions League.
GUATEMALA - Costa Rican coach Mauricio Wright has returned to Guatemala, leading CS Cartaginés that on Tuesday starting at 8:15 pm will face Comunicaciones at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium for the second leg of the playoff towards the Concacaf Champions Cup 2024.
CS Cartaginés drew 1-1 against Comunicaciones last Tuesday, so they only need to win as visitors or draw with two or more goals, according to Concacaf's competition regulations.
So the task will not be easy and coach Mauricio Wright said in a press conference before the match that he does not want to miss the opportunity to shine with Cartaginés and reach the ticket to the 2024 Champions Cup.
"We are focused on this game, there is nothing beyond it, it is only one match ahead with all the situations that are to be played. We hope to have the ability to achieve it and as a team we have been working on it. It is a great opportunity for us and we do not want to let it pass," said the coach.
The coach emphasized the players' mental side, which is important to achieve results in this type of short series. "We have worked a lot on the mental aspect with the boys and we have been growing. We have been working in that area that is extremely important for the players. We feel good and we hope that we can have a great match against a great rival as expected and we are looking for our result. We are going for that and we have been working well on the mental side," he said.
Mauricio Wright is a well-known figure in Guatemalan football due to his time with Deportivo Malacateco and Municipal as a coach. Meanwhile, he was a player with Comunicaciones. "Coming to Guatemala is always immense happiness since I set foot here many years ago in my playing days at Comunicaciones. We feel at home every time we come to Guatemala, but today we owe ourselves to Cartaginés. There is always affection, respect, and admiration for the club, but footballistically we will try to contribute our best to seek the best for Cartaginés," he said.
Finally, he referred to the pressure that Cartaginés will have to achieve a positive result as visitors. "We have the opportunity to fight against Comunicaciones and we do not want to miss it, knowing that it will be a difficult and complicated match. I feel that from game to game, we have analyzed and valued the difficulties we have had. We hope to be better facing what is to come. We have a nice opportunity and we want to take advantage of it by doing things well," he concluded.
