The bill that prohibits online betting advertising in Chilean sports events or clubs was approved by the Chamber of Deputies and will continue its process in the Senate.

It was approved with 132 votes in favor, one against, and four abstentions in the session held this Wednesday.

The bill, promoted by Deputy Marco Antonio Sulantay (UDI), prohibits any commercial relationship between an online betting platform and sports organizations, especially clubs.

The initiative establishes fines for non-compliance, ranging from 500 to 2,000 UTM, as well as the loss of legal personality if necessary.

"This shows that parliamentarians are aware that it is a problem we must regulate and take responsibility for. Especially because it is not acceptable that the million-dollar profits produced by betting platforms, which by the way are illegal in Chile, depend on the results of their clients, who in this case are the sports clubs that have signed advertising contracts," argued Sulantay.

The gremialist parliamentarian added, "The activity carried out by these platforms is illicit in Chile. Here, gambling is prohibited, except for the exceptional cases indicated by law. However, these companies have signed million-dollar contracts, becoming sponsors of practically all Chilean football."

Finally, he indicated that "the signed contracts that are in force must cease at the end of twelve months after the Law is enacted."
