According to RPP, the Universitario de Deportes stadium will be used by the Peruvian National Team for their first matches of the qualifying rounds towards the 2026 World Cup.

This Wednesday, CONMEBOL announced the fixtures for the South American qualifiers for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026: in said tournament, the Peru National Team will make its debut - as a visitor - against Paraguay. After that match, the bicolor team will host Brazil at the Monumental stadium, a venue that has been confirmed to be the home of the Peruvian team. At least, in the first games.

RPP reported that the Universitario de Deportes stadium will be used by the team led by coach Juan Reynoso in the first matches they have to play in our country, due to some renovations that the National Stadium will undergo for the Under 17 World Cup, which will take place this year in our country.

According to FIFA requirements, the José Díaz stadium will have a new drainage system and a surface adaptation from sand to grass. Therefore, the home of the Peru National Team could host matches for a period of approximately five months.

In that sense, the Peruvian team will face Brazil and Argentina - in September and October, respectively - at the Universitario de Deportes stadium, a sports venue that has a capacity of 80 thousand spectators (between stands and boxes).

What will be the format of the playoff for the 2026 World Cup?

It should be noted that for this World Cup edition, CONMEBOL was awarded six places, with an option for a playoff. For this last qualifying alternative, five teams from the confederations (except UEFA) will be considered, plus one from the host confederation (Concacaf). Notably, of these six teams, the four that rank the lowest in the FIFA Ranking will play two matches.

Then, the two classified teams - from these matches - will face the other two teams that are better positioned in the Ranking. At the end of these playoffs, it will be determined which countries (only two) will accompany the 46 that qualified directly to the World Cup.
