Sir Alex Ferguson in intensive care after brain haemorrhage

England and Scotland woke up worried about the health of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson (76), who remains in intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery on Saturday night following a brain haemorrhage.

"Ferguson fights for his life" coincided in their headlines the sensationalist The Sun with other newspapers like Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph to summarize the situation.

There have been no further updates on his health since Manchester United's statement that "everything went well" in the operation and that the Scottish needs to "spend time in intensive care to aid his recovery".

The news has shocked a country that had of Alex Ferguson the image of "a man who seemed indestructible, unbeatable, a perennial element of our football landscape," wrote the Telegraph.

The operation caught the whole world by surprise. Sir Alex Ferguson appeared in good shape last Sunday at Old Trafford to pay tribute to one of his great rivals, Arsène Wenger, on the Frenchman's final visit as Arsenal's coach after 22 seasons leading the Gunners.

The two legendary coaches, great rivals until Ferguson's retirement in 2013, exchanged some words before the Scot, with 13 Premier League titles, offered a silver trophy to the Frenchman.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time Ferguson has suffered a health setback. In 2003 he underwent heart surgery for arrhythmia and has since been living with a pacemaker.

This did not prevent Ferguson, who had already contemplated the idea of retiring in 2002, from remaining at the helm of the Red Devils for another 10 years, winning five English titles and a Champions League.
