Decio de María, President of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), stated that if the hosting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are won, the ideal scenario would be to have an opening match played in Mexico, the United States, and Canada on the same day.
The leader expressed that if the hosting rights are secured, the location for the opening match has not yet been determined.
"It would be good to have a match in each country on the first day, but that decision will be made after the host country for the World Cup is decided," he said.
Carlos Cordeiro, President of the United States Soccer Federation (Ussoccer), indicated that they have recommended this possibility to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
The American leader mentioned that the Concacaf's bid to host this competition has been well received worldwide, so he is confident they will obtain the necessary votes.
"We have been welcomed with open arms and great enthusiasm by all the member associations we have met with," he said during a teleconference in Kuala Lumpur, Thailand.
He dismissed the idea that political situations could affect this joint bid, as it is purely a matter of sports. "This is not geopolitics, we are talking about football, and we are very focused on the merits of our candidacy," he added.
The announcement of the host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be made on June 13th in Moscow, Russia, during the FIFA Congress.
