Gladys Tejeda won the gold medal in the marathon at the Pan American Games 2015, but due to muscle fatigue she couldn't participate in the 10,000 meters race, in which Inés Melchor managed to get fifth place.
Gladys Tejeda is still in the process of recovering from the muscle fatigue she suffered after participating in the women's Marathon. Tejada didn't want to take a risk because she still wants to continue giving joy and smiles to the Peruvian people.
Tejeda spoke with Deporte Total about her recovery process and assured that she is already planning her participation in Rio 2016.
1. Almost a week has passed since you won the gold medal. Are you already recovered?
I'm very happy. I'm recovering after running 42 kilometers. It's not easy to recover and be in shape for a competition, let alone for training.
2. We heard that you took an ice bath to try to optimize your muscles.
Yes, it's true. This helped to compensate for all the impact, especially from the course. The route is very harsh and demanding. [Laughs]
4. Did you intend to run the 10,000 meters?
Initially, yes. But I couldn't because the recovery time is very short [4 days]. I wouldn't be able to perform even at 80%. I don't want to take any risks because I don't want my sports career to end here.
5. We heard you had some kidney problems.
Not at all. It was just an impact, which is natural for high-level athletes. The course is very exhausting, it makes your back, legs, etc. hurt. But there is no problem.
6. What's next for Gladys Tejeda? I hear you might participate in the New York Marathon.
We have to be thinking about Rio 2016. With that goal in mind, we will make a new plan. So far, I don't know where else I can compete. That will depend on our coach and the Peruvian Federation.
7. You fulfilled and made all Peruvians happy with the gold medal you achieved.
Thank you for being aware of this sport.
