A header that will be remembered forever.

On July 9th, 11 years ago Zinedine Zidane delivered a strong header to Marco Materazzi in the final of the 2006 World Cup between France and Italy. 'Zizou' was expelled in that match, which also marked the end of his career as a football player, and he couldn't lift the World Cup.

After an extraordinary World Cup where he shone on his own and amazed the world with his good play, Zidane was on his way to winning the second World Cup title for France. The current Real Madrid coach had eliminated heavyweight teams like Spain, Brazil, and Portugal. He had even scored a magnificent penalty goal against Gianluigi Buffon in the final against Italy.

However, in the 110th minute of the match with the score tied 1-1, everything changed. Zidane was involved in the most controversial action of the tournament by delivering a direct headbutt to Materazzi, who moments before had been pulling his shirt. After an exchange of words in which both insulted each other, the '10' reacted in the worst way.

Immediately, the match was stopped for a few minutes and the Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo consulted with his assistants, who saw what happened. Upon noticing that aggression from Zidane, the referee ran up to the Frenchman and showed him the red card, putting an end to his presence in the match and his career as a football player.

In the penalty shootout, Italy defeated France with a score of 5-3 and thus won their fourth World Cup in their history. The most remembered image of that final is Zidane walking towards the locker rooms with the World Cup on his back.
