Until 2015, Chile's sports history was ungrateful. Many Chilean teams, who reached the final stages of official tournaments, did not have the fortune of winning a championship. However, throughout history, Chile had the opportunity to reach the final six times. And in four of them they succeeded.

The first semifinal was played on June 6, 1962, in the Chile World Cup, when they lost to Pelé's Brazil with a resounding 2-4 against. It took 17 years for Chile to reach another semifinal and be able to overcome the disappointment of losing at home. Although this time it meant the first step to a final for Chile.

It was the 1979 Copa América, when the tournament was played with home and away matches. The opponent at that time was Peru, whom they defeated 2-1 away and drew at the National Stadium. Later, La Roja would lose the final against Paraguay.

In 1987, Chile played its third semifinal. The second in the Copa América. For this tournament, which was already played in one location, Chile faced Colombia in the semifinals, winning 2-1. In the final, Chile was defeated by Uruguay by the minimum score.

It took 12 years for Chile to embark on its feat again, and it was a revenge match against the team that defeated them in the 1987 final. This time it was the 1999 Copa América. However, Chile could not defeat Uruguay and lost in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

The other two finals belong to Chile's golden generation. Sixteen years after losing to Uruguay, Chile managed to turn around a difficult match against Peru and reached the final, where they won their first Copa América. The other final was in 2016, in the Copa América Centenario, where they defeated a meritless Colombia by two goals to one.

Today, Chile faces its seventh semifinal in official tournaments against Portugal. One of the most difficult matches for La Roja and this golden generation.
