Xabi Alonso’s side has had a near-perfect start to the season, racking up 11 wins in 12 games in all competitions, with their only defeat in LaLiga coming against Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid’s good form extends to Europe, where Jude Bellingham’s goal gave them a 1-0 win over Juventus in midweek, maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League group stage. In LaLiga, they are top of the table with 24 points after eight wins in nine games. Although Madrid have not been at their best defensively, conceding nine goals, they remain the second highest scoring team in the league with 20 goals. Madrid will be looking for revenge, as Barcelona won all four Clásicos last season, including a painful 4-0 defeat at the Bernabéu.
For their part, FC Barcelona arrive in Madrid after a 6-1 thrashing of Olympiacos in the Champions League, getting back to winning ways after a recent 4-1 league defeat to Sevilla. The Catalan side, which is LaLiga’s top scorer with 24 goals, has had injury problems that have affected its consistency at the start of the campaign. Its only points dropped in the league came in that defeat to Sevilla and an earlier draw against Rayo Vallecano.
Coach Hansi Flick will have to rely on his young talent, with Lamine Yamal as a key player, in the absence of several important attackers. After El Clásico, Real Madrid will have a demanding schedule, facing Valencia and then visiting Liverpool in the Champions League before the international break. Similarly, Barcelona will have four more games before November, including matches against Elche, Celta Vigo, and a trip to Club Brugge.
