The nationality of football player Byron Castillo, who played for Ecuador in the qualifiers for Qatar 2022, and the possibility of Tri being left out of the World Cup became a trending topic on social media in the last few hours.
It all started after a piece of information was released stating that the Barcelona de Guayaquil player was not Ecuadorian and his place of birth was Tumaco, a district located in the department of Nariño, Colombia.
The news detailed that in a trial, evidence had been presented that the player is Colombian, however, the person in question is a namesake of the professional footballer who belongs to the Guayaquil team and scored 614 goals with the Ecuadorian national team in the South American process towards Qatar 2022.
Even a birth certificate was published, but in the names section it says Bayron Javier and the player is Byron David.
At the beginning of 2021, there were speculations that Byron Castillo was Colombian, but after investigations carried out by the Civil Registry of the northern country, it was determined that the 23-year-old footballer is Ecuadorian. He was born in Playas, located in the province of Guayas near Guayaquil.
With that information, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) consulted FIFA and Conmebol and was able to call up Castillo without any problems in the qualifiers, playing against Paraguay (twice), Chile (twice), Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Argentina.
