Quito -
The Ecuadorian Football Federation has received approval from the National COE to start two of its competitions: Women's Super League and Second Category; however, parameters for the Copa Ecuador have not been defined for this season.
"The Copa Ecuador is among the protocols presented," said Ecuafútbol president Francisco Egas on Wednesday on La Red radio, but clarified that its development is not defined.
"We are going to talk to the teams to see if there is space for this championship, because the clubs' priority is the national tournament (LigaPro)," said Egas.
The local championships are defining their dates for competition. After a three-month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic, Serie A is planning to restart the tournament in July, with at least five matchdays to be played on Wednesdays, out of the 21 available until the end of the year, while Serie B and Second Category would start in August.
International competitions would resume in September, according to Conmebol. Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana are tournaments that would involve several clubs, and to those competitions, the call-up of players from local teams to join the national team that will compete in the qualifying rounds for the 2022 World Cup, leaves little room for the dates of this tournament, which in 2019 played its only edition.
Another part of the problem is also "with the television rights holder" of the Copa Ecuador, so Francisco Egas announced that due to the suspension of activities due to the pandemic, and the adjusted dates to resume local competitions, "several changes in the Copa Ecuador format have been considered."
