José Pékerman caused surprise throughout Venezuela when he informed the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) of his irrevocable decision to resign as coach of the 'Vinotinto' a few months before the start of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite taking charge in November 2021 after his stint with the Colombian National Team, the Argentine coach is leaving after leading four official matches, all for the qualifiers for Qatar 2022.

The main reason for ending his contract with the Venezuelan National Team is that the FVF failed to fulfill the commitments they had made, which were important for Pékerman and his coaching staff's work, such as improving the training ground and facilities and settling the debts that his collaborators had with the federation.

The 73-year-old coach was in charge of the Venezuelan national team for one year and three months. During this time, they played 10 matches, including friendlies and qualifiers, winning five, drawing one, and losing the remaining matches.

It is known that the situation of the FVF is not the best, and that is reflected in the number of coaches who have passed through the national team in the last three years. José Peseiro, Leo González, and Pékerman have all been in the 'Venezuelan' bench, but they have not lasted more than two years in the position.
