A security guard from Lusail Stadium died this Tuesday after spending three days in the ICU as a result of a serious fall suffered the previous Saturday, the organization of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar reported in a statement.
In their statement, the organizers specify that on Saturday the 10th, John Njau Kibue, a security guard at Lusail stadium, "suffered a serious fall while on duty."
"The stadium's medical teams immediately attended to him and provided him with emergency treatment before transporting him by ambulance to the intensive care unit at Hamad Medical Hospital," it adds.
"We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of his medical team, he unfortunately passed away in the hospital on Tuesday, December 13, after spending three days in the intensive care unit. His family has been informed. We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends during these difficult moments," it reports.
The organizers add that "they are urgently investigating the circumstances that led to the fall and will provide more information pending the outcome of the investigation."
"We will also ensure that his family receives all outstanding fees and amounts of money," the letter concludes.
That day, the quarterfinal match between the Netherlands and Argentina was held at Lusail Stadium, in which, tragically, the American reporter Grant Wahl also passed away. It was subsequently learned that two other journalists, Khalid al-Misslam and Roger Pearce, have also died during the tournament.
