Diego Maradona added another defeat as coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata on Monday, losing 2-1 against Talleres de Córdoba, the second-placed team in the Argentine Superliga.
With this new defeat, Gimnasia remains in last place in the championship with one point and in the penultimate place in the relegation table, among the three teams that will be demoted at the end of the 2019/20 season.
"It's a bitterness. We had it, but then came that penalty... There is always suspicion with penalties. I like it when the referee calls it right for both teams. This is not how you can play," Maradona said to the local television about the play that resulted in the final 2-1 score.
But the worst part came later. When asked if he had something to say to the referee, he answered: "Mastrángelo is already bad, he was born bad and will die bad," he concluded.
Defeat in the final stage
Talleres' goals were scored by Jonathan Menéndez in the 11th minute and by Colombian player Dayro Moreno from a controversial penalty in the 78th minute, while Maradona's team scored the equalizer in the 48th minute through Manuel Guanini.
In the final minutes, the referee expelled Andrés Cubas from Talleres and Matías García from Gimnasia, in addition to awarding a second penalty to the home team that Moreno missed.
The leader of the Argentine league is Boca Juniors with 17 points, one more than Talleres in second place and two ahead of Argentinos Juniors.
