Barcelona, who were eliminated from the Champions League moments before playing due to Inter Milan's previous victory, closed their nightmare Wednesday with a 3-0 defeat at home against Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the fifth matchday of Group C.
The German team, already qualified for the round of 16, mathematically secured first place, adding a perfect 15 points before the final matchday. Second is Inter (10 points) and Barcelona (3rd, 4) can no longer reach the round of 16 and will have to settle for playing in the Europa League in the second half of the continental season.
The atmosphere at Camp Nou just before the start of the match between the almost 85,000 spectators was one of desolation: Inter had just won 4-0 against Viktoria Pilsen and that made any effort by the Barcelona club to keep their hopes alive meaningless.
Facing a demoralized team, Bayern had a relatively comfortable match, building a good advantage by halftime with goals from Sadio Mané (9th minute) and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting (30th). In the 90+5th minute, Benjamin Pavard sealed the third and final goal.
