Robert Lewandowski was one of the great stars of football who spoke out against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Through his social networks, where he has millions of followers around the world, the forward sent messages to condemn the war. So, for those manifestations, the Barcelona '9' received a symbolic recognition that was carried out by Andriy Shevchenko.
The former Ukrainian forward met with the main face of the Polish team on the National Stadium in Warsaw. After the respective greeting, 'Sheva' handed the center-forward an armband with the colors of his country's flag and made a special request looking ahead to the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
For Shevchenko and his compatriots, it will be exciting to see Lewandowski wearing that armband in the matches he plays in the World Cup (November 20th to December 18th). Next, the former Ukraine coach said, "This armband symbolizes many emotions related to my country for me. I thank you and the entire Polish nation for supporting my compatriots".
Immediately, Robert responded to such gesture: "Freedom is one of the most important rights. It was natural for me to support you and be by your side". Later, through his social networks, he committed to wearing the armband: "It was a pleasure to meet you! It will be an honor for me to wear this captain band with the colors of Ukraine in the World Cup".
Lewandowski backed Ukraine
This will not be the first time Barcelona's top scorer wears a distinctive mark with Ukrainian colors on his arm. In his time with Bayern Munich and days after Russia's attacks, he wore a similar ribbon to the one given by Shevchenko.
It happened on February 26th, when Bayern Munich faced Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. After the gesture, Lewandowski commented: "The world cannot accept what is happening there. I hope that everyone supports Ukraine".
At another time, as captain, he expressed his opposition to facing Russia for a spot in Qatar 2022: "As captain of the Polish national team, I will talk to my teammates about the match against Russia to develop a common position on this matter and present it to the President of the Polish Football Federation as soon as possible", he stated.
