The rivalry between Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon dates back in WWE; however, the most recent chapter happened in July. This was after the Canadian complained about the commissioner of SmackDown's arbitrary decisions.
Since then, Shane and Owens have been engaged in a battle that escalated into a legal dispute. To the point where 'KO' was fired, but then reinstated after legal action. But all of that ended on the 20th anniversary of SmackDown.
Both fought in a ladder match on SmackDown and the winner would have the power to fire the other. And although Shane is not a full-time wrestler, he dominated the match and was even close to winning.
However, when he was about to do so, Owens grabbed him and hit him with a 'bomb' against another ladder. Thus, 'KO' defeated him and was able to afford firing him.
