For years, it was argued against a women's Royal Rumble that the small number of female wrestlers made this type of match impossible. Finally, with three brands available and the addition of several legends, WWE has been unable to postpone the realization of the first one any longer, which will steal the night on January 28th. However, this opens up the debate of whether a new championship could be added to this division's showcases, and the tag team championship seems the most logical.
Recently, the company itself, in a list of 8 wishes for 2018, included a women's tag team championship, although rumors date back to more than half a decade ago, when the idea was already discussed. And I say recover, because in 1983, the then WWF created a belt with these characteristics, whose inaugural titleholders were Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria, and it remained active until 1989.
Sasha Banks, one of the favorites to win the Royal Rumble, and a key piece of the Women's Revolution that began in NXT, discussed this topic with Sky Sports.
"The Boss" explained why she wants to see that championship back on the company's programming.
"I would love to see it. There are enough women to have a women's tag team championship. We have had multiple stories and rivalries, but at the same time, it is very difficult to achieve our goals if we are not fighting for something. Only one woman can go for the women's championship and I believe that if we had tag team championships, we would be able to create more interesting stories. We have team matches every day, every week, so I say, why not have a championship involved?"
