In the N° 245 edition of El Gráfico magazine, in December 2005, the double-page photograph features two familiar faces of Millonarios from Ricardo Lunari: Fabián Vargas and Federico 'El Pocho' Insúa.
There they are, ten years ago, the man from Bogota and the man from Buenos Aires celebrating Boca Juniors' title in the Copa Sudamericana. Fabián sees the image. "Wow, what a great photo," he says.
Would you like to repeat that image, you and 'El Pocho' as champions, but with Millonarios?
"That's the dream we have. Every time you see these memories, these photos, they make you want to be celebrating, and that's the goal. We were very close last semester and now we are working to be champions together again. Lift a new trophy."
Why is Millonarios struggling at the start of this season?
"I see it more from the media's side. We have three points in three matches, two of them away. Those points are very important to me and we have to make them count by defending our home ground. It's not easy to play away from home, and Millonarios always goes out to win in every stadium and always plays the same way. Now we have a difficult match against Patriotas and a victory will leave us in a very good position and will give value to the two points we earned away."
EL 5 GIVES HIS 5 FOR THE COLOMBIAN NATIONAL TEAM
Fabián Vargas was a champion of the Copa America with Colombia in 2001. He is the memory of the fierce, aggressive number 5 midfielder. Tireless. He knows the position, and he ensures that it was in that area of the field where the national team suffered in the Copa America in Chile.
"If Pékerman identified a problem, it was there. He had difficulties assembling the midfield, and also certain positions in defense. The trusted players were injured and he had to look for alternatives, and that's when it became complicated. I think they missed players like Abel Aguilar and Fredy Guarín. And on top of that, Edwin Valencia got injured during the competition."
With the qualifiers coming up soon, who would you like to see in that position that you occupied for so many years?
"It's up to the coach to decide. I think there are players who are performing at a very high level, who are demanding attention. I believe they are considering possibilities for that midfield. In the friendly against Peru, I imagine he will call up a couple to start bringing them closer in case there are injuries again."
Do you dare to mention any names?
"I think Daniel Torres is doing a good job, but I think that is exclusively up to the coach."
BECAUSE OF HEART AND PAST WITH BOCA, FABIÁN SUPPORTS TIGRES
A fan of América de Cali and a former player of Boca Juniors. Fabián Vargas has his favorite in the Copa Libertadores. The last time River Plate reached the final of the continental tournament, they defeated América and won the title. Fabián hasn't forgotten.
"I remember that 1996 Copa very well because it was a painful day for me as a fan. We couldn't win that title after chasing it so much and being so close. Now River is back in the final against a Mexican team that is very strong, and to me, the series is open," says the current Millonarios player.
Which team would you like to see lifting the trophy?
"I prefer Tigres to be the champion."
