Mauricio Sulaimán presents the Huichol belt for Álvarez vs Golovkin
The president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán, presented the Huichol belt that will be awarded to the winner of the fight between Mexican Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez and Kazakh Gennady Golovkin.
The fight will take place in Las Vegas on September 16, where Golovkin will defend his middleweight titles from the WBC, WBA, and IBF against the fighter from Guadalajara, who is the favorite in the betting odds for this bout.
The flags of the countries of the contenders are displayed on the belt, which was presented today in a press conference at a hotel in Mexico City, and was made by Huichol artisans Luis and Sergio de la Cruz.
The trophy that the winner will take home depicts the cycle of maize, a work that took the artisans more than 300 hours to complete the beaded embroidery.
The president of the WBC reiterated that they aim to commemorate these important dates - May 5th and September 16th - for Mexico, with a beautiful work created by Mexicans, as it happened with the first Huichol belt that was created for the fight on May 6th between Julio César Chávez Jr. and Saúl Álvarez.
