The first Money in the Bank match took place at WrestleMania 21, with Edge winning the briefcase. After that, his career skyrocketed and he was dubbed the 'biggest opportunist in WWE'.
The mastermind behind this type of match was Chris Jericho, who proposed the idea to Eric Bischoff, the manager of RAW in 2005. The inaugural match featured Christian, Chris Benoit, Edge, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and Jericho himself, all from the red brand.
In the ring, each wrestler had the opportunity to win the briefcase, but in the final moments, a worn-out Benoit escaped from Kane and tried to climb the ladder. At that moment, Edge appeared with a chair to hit him and make him fall to the mat.
With no opponent standing, the former tag team champion claimed victory, holding onto the briefcase for 280 days. In the end, he cashed it in at the New Year's Revolution event, easily defeating John Cena and becoming WWE Champion for the first time.
