Two South Korean Footballers Test Positive for COVID-19, Forcing Postponement of 11 Matches

The positive cases of COVID-19 from two South Korean footballers have forced the postponement of 11 matches in the first and second divisions in South Korea, according to the K League, the governing body for both leagues.

On one hand, FC Seoul's centre-back Hwang Hyun-soo tested positive on Monday, which has led to the postponement of eight matches in the K League 1.

These eight matches include the next four games of both FC Seoul and Seongnam FC scheduled for the next two weeks, since Hwang was on the field in the last match they played on April 30.

In turn, the K League announced today that a player from Chungnam Asan has just tested positive and the next three matches of this team in the K League 2 will be postponed.

The identity of the player in question has not been disclosed, and although he has not played any matches in the last 14 days, he has trained with the rest of the group.

This is the first time that a COVID-19 infection has forced the postponement of matches in the South Korean first division, while a case detected last October led to the postponement of a couple of matches in the previous season's second division.

The eight postponed matches in the K League 1 promise to further complicate the scheduling in the South Korean first division, where only 12 teams compete, in a season already overloaded with matches. EFE
