German goalkeeper Loris Karius breaks up with Besiktas
German goalkeeper Loris Karius announced on Monday that he is breaking up with Turkish club Besiktas. Karius has been playing for Besiktas on loan from Liverpool since 2018. The decision comes after the team's management announced a salary dispute with the player a few weeks ago.
"Today I have terminated my contract with Besiktas. It's a shame that it ends like this, but I have done everything to resolve the situation without issues. I have been patient for months, talking to the management over and over again," wrote the 26-year-old German goalkeeper on his Instagram account.
Although he did not explain the reason for the breakup in detail, he pointed out that it was about money matters: "Unfortunately, they have not tried to solve this problem and have even rejected my suggestion to help by accepting a pay cut."
Two weeks ago, the president of Besiktas, Erdal Torunogullari, explained on social media that Karius was "nervous" about a salary dispute and had even sought arbitration.
"He went to FIFA for his remuneration and to terminate the contract. He also demands salaries that do not belong to him. He wants money for months he has not played. If he wants to leave, he can. We do not want to make undeserved payments," said the entrepreneur.
Karius bid farewell to his Turkish fans, emphasizing that he enjoyed playing for the black and white club. He said that the club can be proud of having such dedicated fans who made him feel "welcomed with open arms from day one."
During his 25 matches played in the Turkish Super League, Karius has conceded 29 goals, with 8 matches without conceding a goal.
With 8 weeks remaining in the Super League, interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Besiktas is currently in 5th place, preceded by Galatasaray, Trabzonspor, and Basaksehir, frequent finalists of the competition, as well as the less successful Sivasspor.
