Fernando Alonso has started 2018 in the USA... but not on vacation. The McLaren driver will compete at the end of the month in the 24 Hours of Daytona, behind the wheel of a Ligier JS P217 from the United Autosports team alongside Lando Norris and Phil Hanson, but this same weekend (5th to 7th) he will already be working in three days of testing. "Getting out of my comfort zone by participating in such a legendary race like the 24 Hours of Daytona is simply incredible. I am really looking forward to competing with United Autosports, the current European LMP3 champion. I can't wait to get back in the car and drive it on the famous oval. In the past few months, I have been spending a lot of time watching several 24 Hours of Daytona races. Undoubtedly, it will be a lot of fun," says the Spanish driver who is already in Florida.
Daytona will be the third competition that he will participate in the land of the stars and stripes after Formula 1 and his great experience of 2017, the Indy 500. "It is a real pleasure to race again in the United States, in front of American fans. In less than a year, I will have competed in two legendary races, which makes me very proud. I have always wanted to face the challenge of other categories in the world of motorsport because this is what you need to improve as a driver," says Alonso, who is excited about his team, United: "In the test we did in Spain in November, everyone welcomed me and made me feel part of the family. I am very happy to spend more time with the team and my teammates in the coming days, now in the ROAR."
