What to Know
The Gavitt Games, which pits the Big Ten against the Big East, may be in its final year of existence. Conference realignment has perhaps killed the event. Michigan enters Monday’s game 2-2 all-time in the Gavitt Games.
The Wolverines have looked sharp in wins over UNC Asheville (99-74) and Youngstown State (92-62), blowouts that could have produced even more lopsided results if not for the final few minutes. Michigan is ninth in the country in effective field goal percentage per kenpom.com. That’s good news for a team that entered the season with questions about its shooting.
St. John’s, playing in its campus arena, handled Stony Brook 90-74. The Red Storm are completely remodeled under Rick Pitino. The roster is almost entirely first-year transfers, plus a couple of freshman and one key returner.
Gus Johnson, fresh off calling Michigan football’s win at Penn State on Saturday, will serve as the play-by-play voice for Monday’s game alongside Bill Raftery.
