Guadalajara was one of the semifinalist cities to host the Gay Games 2022; however, it will be competing with two other very strong candidates: Hong Kong and Washington.
During the month of May, the three cities will have a visit from the members of the Federation of Gay Games, and in October the final presentation will be held at the General Annual Assembly in Paris; it will be in November of this year that the decision will be made on which city will host the event.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a city in China, with approximately 7.3 million people, the candidate with which Guadalajara will be competing to host the Gay Games 2022.
In its portal, Hong Kong presents itself as an iconic and world-class city, where they will offer the more than 15,000 participants and 25,000 spectators a unique experience.
The Gay Games 2022 would have 36 sports competitions, including dragon boating, trail running, and tower running.
This city has the support of the government, as well as different sports federations, cultural institutions, consulates, universities, foundations, and travel agencies.
Like Guadalajara, Hong Kong is applying to be the host of the Gay Games for the first time, being the first city in Asia to do so.
Washington DC
The capital of the United States is ready to host the Gay Games, with the great support of Mayor Muriel Bowser, since the beginning of its application, as they seek to show the world that they are an inclusive city.
"We are making a bid because we know what is expected of a host city and we can offer what is necessary for a fun, well-run, internationally focused, and financially successful event that helps FGG build a solid foundation for the future," is the statement of the Steering Committee that appears on their portal.
Washington has different sites for the thousands of competitors and attendees to enjoy during their stay, such as museums and monuments.
On the other hand, the U.S. capital has various transportation options, as they can travel by metro, bicycle, or simply walk around the city.
In terms of sports, Washington boasts an extensive network of LGBTQ+ community teams and leagues, which is why they claim to be prepared to host the Gay Games 2022.
