The 2023 Iowa Print Sports Writers Association all-state football teams

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.

Weisskopf led Williamsburg to the UNI-Dome three straight years, and the Raiders broke through with the 3A title last week.

He played multiple positions for the Raiders in all three phases of the game. On offense, he passed for 1,123 yards and 20 touchdowns, rushed for two touchdowns, and had 14 catches for 212 yards and 4 TDs.

On defense he had 50 solo tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery.

The Raiders were 32-6 in his three years as a varsity starter, including 12-1 this season.

Ries led Monticello to its first state semifinal game since 1988 and led the state in total TDs (57) and total yards (4,485).

He also had 97 tackles, 27.5 for loss.

Ries ended his career as the state’s all-time career yardage leader, amassing 12,984 yards.
