Wilma Arizapana is one of Peru's most prominent long-distance runners and just before Mother's Day, she showed her other side: being the mother of three children who also share her passion.
Life was not easy for Arizapana, but having three children was the greatest blessing she could receive. Sofia, Lucelia, and Juan Miguel motivate her in every training session at more than 3,800 meters in Puno.
The greatest joy for Wilma is running alongside her children, sharing the passion for one of the sports that has given Peru the most achievements. Sofia Mamani Arizapana, our champion's eldest daughter, commented on how exciting it is to learn from her every day: "Training alongside my mother means a lot to me, running is a pleasure, it's my passion, it's everything. At night, I dream of having a medal on my chest. I want to be an Olympic medalist."
Wilma Arizapana competed in the 2012 London Olympics and is one of Peru's representatives for the 2019 Lima Pan American Games. The long-distance runner from Puno has the best time of the year with 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 45 seconds, a time she achieved with a sixth-place finish in the 2017 Daegu Marathon. She also qualified for the 2017 London Athletics World Championships.
