The German driver Nico Rosberg will start from pole position in Suzuka, narrowly beating his teammate Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes team.
Rosberg dominated all the qualifying sessions of the weekend and confirmed his leadership in the Suzuka circuit with a best time of one minute and 30.647 seconds, 0.013 seconds ahead of Hamilton on a cloudy afternoon.
"I'm happy with the final result," said Rosberg to reporters. "I did everything well throughout the weekend and had a good outcome, good feelings, feeling comfortable, which allowed me to make this leap at the end."
The privileged position that Rosberg achieved on Saturday is his third consecutive pole with Mercedes in Suzuka, which could give his team their third consecutive championship this Sunday.
The pole position will also give Rosberg a good chance to extend his lead of 23 points over his teammate Hamilton with only four races left until the end of the season.
Hamilton had to retire from the last race in Malaysia due to an engine failure.
