This Monday, July 17th, the Congress of the Republic received bill N° 5584/2022-CR, which proposes the "Law that establishes civil unions between same-sex couples". Additionally, members of the parliamentary group led by Keiko Fujimori subscribed to this document.
As seen in this official document, the objective of this law is: "To promote equality of civil rights, duties and opportunities for all people who live in an affective relationship, regardless of where it comes from, be it marriage, common-law marriage or civil union, regardless of their sex and sexual orientation."
Requirements for civil union, according to the new bill
- The union is composed of two people of the same sex.
- The union has existed in a stable cohabitation for a minimum period of two (2) years.
- The union is registered in the Civil Union Registry.
- The members of the union have legal residence in Peru, for no less than two (2) years prior to the date they request registration.
Civil union bill in Peru
As a reminder, in 2022, Congressman Alejandro Cavero announced on his social media the presentation of a bill that allows Civil Union between same-sex couples in Peru.
"Dear friends, I want to announce the presentation of my bill to establish Civil Union in Peru. This bill will seek to regulate the legal effects of this institution in order to achieve true equality under the law for same-sex couples," said Cavero.
Likewise, Congresswoman Martha Moyano from Fuerza Popular previously presented a legislative initiative for Civil Union that does not recognize adoption by same-sex couples.
