WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE SOUTH AMERICAN U20 CHAMPIONSHIP

All the matches of the South American U20 Championship are played in the host nation, and the ten national U20 teams from CONMEBOL participate in each edition (unless any association withdraws). The teams are divided into two groups of five where they play against each other once, meaning each team plays four matches.

The top three teams from each group of the South American U20 Championship qualify for a final round of six, where they also play against each other once, meaning each team plays five matches. The results of this final round determine the champion and the South American qualification for the next FIFA U20 World Cup, and in some editions, for the Olympic Football Tournament or the Pan American Football Tournament.

Unlike most international competitions, the South American U20 Championship does not have a final match, a match for third place, or direct elimination stages between teams. In case of a tie in the number of points obtained by the teams in either of the two rounds, the classification is determined following the following system:

  • Goal difference.
  • Number of goals scored.
  • The result of the match or matches played between the tied teams.
  • By draw.
