Through a statement, the club expressed regret over the violent incidents that occurred in Puno, where 17 deaths have been reported.

The Regional Health Directorate in Puno confirmed on the evening of Monday, January 9, the death of 17 people and a total of 52 injured, as a result of the clashes between the security forces and the protesters against the government of Dina Boluarte. In the face of this situation, Binacional club has decided to suspend the presentation of its team, in solidarity with the families affected by these events.

This was announced on Tuesday, through a statement shared on their social media. "In solidarity with the families of our region affected during the social mobilizations, the management of the Binacional Sports Club decided to suspend the presentation match scheduled for Wednesday, January 18," the document states.

It also emphasized that "the Club is not oblivious to the pain that is being experienced at this moment in our region; therefore, the decision was made to suspend the 'Night of the Mighty'. At the appropriate time, we will announce a new date for the presentation of our 2023 squad." The southern team had planned to face Deportivo Pasto from Colombia on that day.

Previously, the 'Mighty of the South' had already spoken out about what happened last Monday, after the takeover of the Juliaca airport, where acts of violence took place and paralyzed activities in that area. For this reason, they even changed their profile pictures on social media as a sign of mourning.

"We express our deep regret for the death of our brothers and sisters from Puno during the social mobilizations taking place in our region. We regret these irreparable losses and express our heartfelt condolences to the family," reads the publication made on their official Twitter account.

Turbulent panorama

Puno is not the only region that has been experiencing protests against the current government. In other areas of the country such as Ayacucho, Arequipa, Cusco, Huancavelica, Junin, and La Libertad, confrontations have occurred that have left dozens injured and more than 20 dead since Boluarte took office.

As a result, on Monday night, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola announced that "a high-level delegation from the Executive will go to Puno, seeking dialogue, and bringing medicine. Please allow the medicine to reach Puno, because the current situation requires us to take a series of humanitarian actions for the wounded."
