The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) emphasized that if a professional driver needs to renew their driver's license, they will no longer have to take the theoretical exam starting Thursday, September 29, as long as they do not have serious or very serious traffic violations on their record.
Through a statement, the MTC indicated that it implemented this provision through Supreme Decree No. 012-2022-MTC, issued on June 28. The following link provides access to the table of violations that include the aforementioned offenses.
The General Director of Authorizations in Land Transport of the MTC, Fabián Susanibar, stated that this measure applies to both professional class A licenses (for larger vehicles) and class B licenses (for motorcycles and mototaxis).
“From now on, transporters who demonstrate a good record and comply with traffic regulations will be able to access this benefit that streamlines the issuance of licenses, which also saves money and time,” said the MTC official.
He emphasized that only good drivers who provide cargo or passenger transportation services will be able to take advantage of this benefit.
The MTC reminded that driver's licenses have a specific validity period, so drivers can check if their license has expired on the Unique Driver Portal: https://licencias.mtc.gob.pe/#/index
If a citizen has an expired license, they must request a renewal to be able to drive again. This procedure, in both Lima and provinces, can be done at any time, before or after the expiration of the enabling document.
With the exemption from the knowledge exam, professional drivers only have to meet two requirements: first, they must take the medical exam at any of the centers authorized by the MTC and then they will have to schedule an appointment for the delivery of the driver's license. In Metropolitan Lima, they can do it through the website https://licencias-tramite.mtc.gob.pe/#/index, and if they are in the interior of the country, the process is carried out at the regional governments.
