After the painful elimination in the playoff for Qatar 2022 against Australia, the 'Tiger' decided to travel to his native Argentina to analyze and think about his future. According to Juan Carlos Oblitas, the Peruvian Football Federation considers that the strategist is "the right person to continue these four or five years" in charge of the Peruvian national team, so Agustín Lozano's intention is for Gareca to renew.

However, the economic issue could be decisive in the negotiation they have, since the General Secretariat and Finance of the Peruvian Football Federation suggested that the possible new contract of the 'Tiger' be with a salary reduction.

Will he accept a pay cut? That will be known after the meeting the Argentine has with the Peruvian Federation. Remember that it had already been reduced by 20% of his payment due to the pandemic, but that amount was later handed over to him.

Gareca is one of the highest-paid coaches in South America. According to the Goal portal, his annual salary amounted to $3,700,000. This amount was agreed upon after the first renewal, after qualifying the Peruvian national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
