The Balón de Oro awards for the 2021-2022 season of the Mexican football league have three Colombians among their candidates: goalkeeper Camilo Vargas and winger Julián Quiñones from the two-time champion Atlas, and center-back William Tesillo from León.
The list of candidates for the award includes other figures from Atlas, the champion of the last two tournaments, Apertura and Clausura, and from the runner-up teams, León and Pachuca.
The starting goalkeeper of Atlas, Camilo Vargas, a regular in the Colombian national team, is the leader of the best defense in the recently finished tournament and has had his main rival in that aspect in his Argentine colleague from Pachuca, Oscar Ustari.
Tesillo, who usually plays as a full-back for the Colombian national team, is vying for the position of best center-back. His main opponent has been the Argentine, Hugo Nervo, from Atlas.
Quiñones is contending with the Ecuadorian from León, Ángel Mena, from León.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 26th in the city of Los Angeles, California. The winners of the awards will be announced after a voting process in which teams, eleven journalists, and fans participate. Later, on August 10th, they will face each other in the so-called All-Star Game.
