Delfina Pignatiello, a great promise in swimming who had participated in Lima 2019 and Tokyo 2020, announced her retirement from professional activity and high competition at the age of 22. 'Delfi' indicated the reason for her retirement and what she will dedicate herself to now.

Delfina wrote an extensive letter on social media, in which she explains that she had made the decision to step aside from the sport some time ago. "In my heart, I will forever keep the pride, joy, and honor of representing our national colors with such passion. Now, I would like to tell you that a few months ago I made the decision to step away from high performance and competition."

However, the young athlete mentioned that she will continue practicing swimming because it is her life. "Sport is part of my life from another perspective, I keep swimming and being in the water will always be my place in the world."

Finally, she referred to her loyal fans and thanked them for everything. "Thanks to those who accompanied me this far and those who choose to continue doing so. I always encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Today, I add: dare to kick the board and start a new game." She also gave great advice to the youth. "Always choose your path with love, courage, and dedication. Hopefully, you become the child you always wanted to be", she emphasized.

What will she dedicate herself to now?

Pignatiello will enter a new phase that makes her very happy. "I bought a camera and embarked on an artistic path that I am exploring with a lot of curiosity, a desire to learn, and continue growing. It makes me very happy and made me dream again."

Important victories of Pignatiello

In her short career, Delfina achieved great victories: she was a two-time champion at the Indianapolis 2017 Junior World Championships (in 800 and 1,500 meters freestyle), won two silver medals at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (in 400 and 800 meters freestyle), won three gold medals (in 400, 800, and 1,500 meters freestyle) at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games and finished in 29th place in the 1,500 meters freestyle and 27th place in the 800 meters freestyle at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
