Diego Godin could leave Atletico Mineiro to join Velez Sarsfield, a team coached by his friend Alexander "Cacique" Medina.

In SportsCenter, journalist Andrea Schettino indicated that there are advanced negotiations between Velez Sarsfield and the Uruguayan player to join the club, although Godin still needs to resolve his departure from the Brazilian team. Initially, the most feasible possibility is that his arrival would be through a loan.

The captain of the Uruguayan National Team has seen a significant decrease in his playing time at the Minas Gerais team since his arrival in January of this year. Out of the eight matches played in Brasileirao, Godin has only played one, was on the bench for two, and was not called up for the rest. In the CONMEBOL Libertadores, he played two out of the six Mineiro games in the group stage.

With this context, the player's desire is to have more continuity and playing time in the upcoming semester, thinking about arriving in the best possible condition for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which is why he came to South American football when he left Cagliari.

An aspect that would make the transfer easier is the great friendship that exists between Godin and Medina, who wanted to sign him when he was the coach of Talleres and the defender was not going through a great moment in European football.

Although the defender and the former forward did not share a team at Nacional, they coincided in the Uruguayan National Team in the only match in which Cacique wore the Celeste jersey: a friendly against England played at Wembley in March 2006.
