During some time, Carlos Zambrano was away from the Peruvian national team. However, in 2019, the 'Lion' was taken into account again by Ricardo Gareca. The national defender gave an interview for Willax Television, in which he revealed the details of his return to the National Team.
"It was just during a Peru vs Germany match, a friendly match. That hurt me more than not going to a World Cup, not playing that match against Germany. Unfortunately, we lost, but the moment came when I went to see my teammates and talked to 'professor' Gareca, and I showed him that I wanted to come back. How much that match against Germany hurt me, I said, 'I want to come back'," he declared.
"He (Ricardo Gareca) told me: 'The doors will always be open for you, it depends on you'," added the 32-year-old national center.

In addition, the Boca Juniors footballer confessed that there was a time when he was not comfortable in the National Team. "There came a time when I didn't feel comfortable, I didn't want to go, I didn't feel part of the group. People sincerely don't care, they only care about you winning. No matter what you say or do, people won't understand," he commented.
The 'Kaiser' indicated that he currently feels part of the national team group. "Two months later, he calls me again (Ricardo Gareca). Just the Copa America comes, we reach a final after so many years. It was something very beautiful. From there, the 'professor' was giving me more opportunities. I feel part of the group, not like a few years ago," he concluded.
