The controversy is inherent to the South American Qualifiers. Bad refereeing, unequal sanctions, and injustices on the field have always been frequent in the qualifying rounds of this continent. However, in recent times, attempts have been made to counteract this type of detrimental situation with modern tools, such as Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which initially represented a significant advancement to avoid -often embarrassing- mistakes in refereeing decisions. But the current reality is quite different from what was expected: VAR is more known for its failures than its successes.
