Young Peruvian athlete Alexia Sotomayor broke the South American record for 100 meters backstroke in her debut at the Peru Bicentennial South American Youth Aquatic Sports Championship, held at Videna. In addition, the Peruvian swimmer won the gold medal along with Argentinean Candela Raviola.

The competitor had her first participation on the morning of Tuesday, November 9th, where she managed to put her name on the South American record for 1,000 meters backstroke, with a time of 1:03.98. In this way, she surpassed the record held by Brazilian Fernando Goeij, who did 01:04.53 in 2015.

Thanks to her excellent performance, the Peruvian athlete qualified for the finals of the competition, where she emerged victorious and won the gold medal along with Argentinean Candela Raviola. Both marked a time of 1:04.02. This is not the first time that the national athlete has won an award, as she also took first place in the Pan American Swimming Cup held in 2020.

In addition to Alexia Sotomayor, swimmer Cristiano Unten also stepped onto the podium in the men's 100 meters backstroke category. The Peruvian participated in the tournament finals, where he won the bronze medal in the South American championship by registering 1:01.92 on the stopwatch. He was only surpassed by Brazilian Samuel Lopes, who took the gold, and Argentinean Tomas Martínez.
